The sky blue piqué polo is the most useful thing a man can own and the easiest to get wrong. Ours is cut and finished in Pakistan from combed cotton piqué, with navy tipping at the collar and cuffs and the Orphic script embroidered at the chest.

Why this sky blue piqué polo is different

Pale blue is easy to wear and easy to ruin in the making. Too grey and it looks washed out; too bright and it looks synthetic. Ours sits between the two, which is the entire point of a colour you intend to wear twice a week rather than twice a year.

The difference is a quarter of an inch. A collar that holds its line instead of curling after three washes. A shoulder seam that stops where your shoulder stops. A body that skims rather than clings. None of it announces itself, and all of it is why the polo reads considered rather than ordinary.

Fabric and construction

Combed cotton piqué, chosen for its open weave. Combing removes the short fibres before spinning, which is why the surface stays smooth through repeated washing instead of pilling at the shoulders and underarms. The piqué texture — a fine raised waffle — gives the cloth its body and holds it away from the skin in heat. It is the correct fabric for a Lahore summer, and the reason piqué has been the standard polo cloth for a century.

Collar and cuffs are ribbed and tipped in navy, holding their shape rather than relaxing into the wash. The placket is finished flat and left open — no buttons to sit wrong under a jacket.

Fit and sizing

Cut close through the shoulder and clean through the body. A considered fit, not a slim one. If you are between sizes or prefer room, take the larger. How to wear the sky blue piqué polo

With linen trousers and no socks in July. With dark denim and loafers in October. Under a jacket when the collar needs to hold its own against a lapel. It earns its place by refusing to be an occasion — it works when a shirt is too much and a t-shirt is not enough, which is most days of the year in this climate.

• Machine wash cold, gentle cycle, with like colours
• Do not bleach
• Reshape and dry flat in shade — a hanger will stretch the shoulders of a wet polo permanently
• Warm iron on the reverse, avoiding the embroidery
• Do not tumble dry

Treated properly the colour holds and the collar keeps its line. That is the argument for one good polo over three ordinary ones, and it is the reason we make fewer things.
